What We Believe
This Statement of Faith outlines the essential beliefs that guide our teaching, leadership, and mission. It forms the theological foundation for Abide Church and unites us in direction.
1. The Scriptures
We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. It was written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures are the final authority for all matters of faith and practice and are sufficient for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 19:7-11, Hebrews 4:12, John 17:17)
2. God
We believe there is one true and living God who exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are coequal in essence and distinct in person, perfectly united in purpose. God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things and is holy, just, loving, sovereign, all-knowing, and all-powerful.
(Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 6:3; 1 Corinthians 8:6, Revelation 4:11)
3. Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who became fully human without ceasing to be fully God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, and fulfilled the will of the Father. He died on the cross as the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins, was buried, and rose bodily from the dead. He ascended into heaven and will return in power and glory.
(John 1:1,14; Luke 1:34-35; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11)
4. The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit is fully God and actively convicts the world of sin and draws people to Christ. He regenerates, indwells, empowers, and seals every believer, producing spiritual growth and equipping them for godly living and service.
(John 16:8-13; Titus 3:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Romans 8:9-11, Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 5:22-23)
5. Humanity and Sin
We believe all people are created in the image of God and have inherent dignity and worth. However, through sin, all humanity is separated from God and is spiritually dead, unable to restore that relationship apart from His grace.
(Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:1-3)
6. Salvation
We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. It cannot be earned through human effort. Through repentance and faith, a person is forgiven of sin, declared righteous before God, and made new in Christ. True salvation results in a transformed life marked by ongoing obedience and growth.
(Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 5:1; John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:17; Acts 4:12; James 2:17)
7. The Church
We believe the Church is the body of Christ, made up of all true believers, with Christ as its head. The local church exists to glorify God through worship, discipleship, fellowship, and the proclamation of the gospel. We are called to live on mission, making disciples of all nations and advancing the Kingdom of God both locally and globally.
(Ephesians 1:22-23; Acts 1:8, 2:42-47; Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
8. Baptism and the Lord's Supper
We believe baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation and is an act of obedience for every believer. It should be administered by immersion following a personal profession of faith in Jesus Christ. We believe the Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of remembrance in which believers reflect on Christ's sacrifice and proclaim His death until He returns.
(Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-5; Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29)
9. The Christian Life
We believe every believer is called to live a life of obedience, empowered by the Holy Spirit. This includes growing in holiness, loving others, serving faithfully, and living on mission to advance the gospel.
(Romans 12:1-2; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:10; John 13:34–35; Matthew 5:16)
10. Marriage and Sexuality
We believe God created marriage to be the covenant union between one biological man and one biological woman for life. We believe sexual intimacy is to be expressed only within this covenant. We affirm that all people are created in God’s image and should be treated with dignity, compassion, and truth.
(Genesis 1:26-28, 2:24; Matthew 19:4–6; Ephesians 5:21-33; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Peter 3:1-7)
11. The Last Things
We believe Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly. There will be a final judgment of all people. Those who are in Christ will spend eternity with God, and those who reject Him will be separated from Him eternally in hell.
(Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; Revelation 20:11–15, 21:1-4; John 14:1–3)
As Baptists, we state these doctrines to witness to the world and ensure doctrinal accountability. Our living faith is based on eternal truth. For a fuller statement, we look to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 as a trusted guide.
